Meet the 2020 competition winners – Atlas Weyland Eden
The winners of the 2020 Young Walter Scott Prize have now been announced, and we’re delighted to publish the eleven winning stories in full, starting with the winner of the 11-15 Years category, Atlas Weyland Eden. His story, We Wolves, is set in the Ice Age and is a powerful evocation of the life of a family of wolves – skilled hunters, meticulous strategists, caring parents, ruthless killers – utterly independent and at the top of the food chain until they are offered food and, perhaps, friendship, and so begins the evolution of the extraordinary relationship between man and, ultimately, dog.
The judges said:
‘Atlas Weyland Eden’s assured, poetic voice brilliantly inhabits the mind of a wolf as he hunts with his pack, then falls wounded and creeps into a circle of huntsmen around their fire, taking the first step into domestication. We Wolves is an extraordinary achievement from a talented young writer.’
