Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, and the Walter Scott Prize

The Walter Scott prize for Historical Fiction moved to what might be considered its natural spiritual home, Abbotsford, in February 2024.

The Prize is now managed by The Abbotsford Trust, the independent charity responsible for Sir Walter Scott’s extraordinary Borders home with the generous support of Hawthornden Foundation, the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust, and The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, in memory of Elizabeth Buccleuch.

Abbotsford is the astonishing home Scott built on the proceeds of storytelling and the book sales of classics such as The Lady of the Lake, Rob Roy and Ivanhoe. Visitors to Abbotsford can explore Walter Scott’s ‘conundrum castle’ home and gardens, woodland and riverside estate walks, Witch Corner: a folklore themed sculpture trail, café, gift shop and exhibition. The house and gardens welcome thousands of visitors from March- December each year and the estate, free and open all year round, welcomes many more.
